Interpreting your Results

After performing a Basic, Advanced, or Juvenile search, HIP returns a list of library items matching the search criteria that you entered. Depending on what type of search you chose (browse, keyword, or an exact match such as an item barcode search), HIP displays different search results.

Types of Search Results

  • Browse search results
  • Keyword (or summary) search results
  • Detailed item information (or full bibliographic information)

Browse

When you choose a browse search, HIP displays an alphabetical browse list (of titles, subjects, authors, or whatever kind of browse search you chose) that includes your search term.

Tip: If your search returns only a single item, HIP displays detailed information about the item rather than first displaying the item in a summary list.

After your search results are returned, you can:

  • View information for a specific item.

Keyword

When you choose a keyword search, HIP displays a summary list of titles matching your search.

Tip: If your search returns only a single item, HIP displays detailed information about the item rather than first displaying the item in a summary list.

For each library item in a summary list of titles, HIP displays specific information such as the item's title, author, publisher, publication date, call number, and status.

Detailed

After doing a search, you may want to view more information about a particular item listed in the search results. HIP can display holdings information (availability) for the item, a brief summary of the item, links to more items by the same author or related subjects within the library, links to online bookstores that may carry the item for purchase, or links to related subjects on the World Wide Web.

If a particular item is available at other library locations, you can see holdings information for those locations by clicking the Other Locations button under the Copy/Holding information. If you do not have an Other Locations button, this item is only available at this location.
