How to Get your Free Library Card

Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador can sign up for a free library card either in person or online.

In Person

Visit any one of our branches across the province to sign up for a library card with a piece of identification that confirms your name and address.

Children under 13 years of age need a parent or guardian to sign them up for a card and to assume responsibility for materials borrowed from the library.

The library strives to be accessible to everyone and are flexible with requirements such as identification and proof of address.  Please visit one of our branches if you need assistance getting a library card.

Online

Fill out and submit the online registration form.

You will receive your library card in the mail. If you are not a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador or you already have a library card, your registration will not be processed.

Once you receive confirmation of your library card number, you can use the NLPL Digital Library to download ebooks and audiobooks, read newspapers and magazines, and access other online content.

During your first visit to your local library, you will be asked for ID to confirm your identity. Children under 13 years of age need a parent or guardian to assume responsibility for materials borrowed from the library.

Visitor Cards

Visitors to the province can obtain a temporary card at any NLPL location.  Visitors can check out up to 3 items at a time from the library’s physical collections.  Valid ID must be presented to obtain a card.
