Statement of Commitment

  • While developing new programs and services to meet the changing needs of our communities, we will also increase awareness of our existing services and programs.

Feedback and Requests

Feedback on physical or digital accessibility barriers at NLPL can be sent here: accessibility@nlpl.ca.

Requests for NLPL documents in alternate formats can be made by completing an NLPL Alternate Format Request form and submitting it to accessibility@nlpl.ca.

If you are planning to attend an NLPL event or program and require accommodations, you can submit an NLPL Accommodation form or by asking at for the form at your local library. Completed forms can be sent to accessibility@nlpl.ca

Digital Collections
Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA)

Newfoundland and Labrador Public Libraries offers access to a collection of over 1 million books, magazines, and newspapers accessible formats for people with a print disability through the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA).

eBooks and eAudiobooks

We have a variety of eBooks and eAudiobooks for children and adults that can be downloaded to a computer or portable device with a valid NLPL library card and PIN number. Visit our Digital Library for more information.

Signed Stories (ASL)

A collection of ASL (American Sign Language) signed picture books is available through our Digital Library. These titles also include voice over narration.

Physical Collections
Audiobooks

Full-length recordings of popular fiction and non-fiction books are available on CD.

Large Print Books

Large print books are available to borrow system-wide. Titles include best-sellers, fiction, and non-fiction. Some titles are also available in French.

Braille

A small collection of braille books are available to borrow system-wide. More braille material is available through CELA.

Video - Descriptive and Closed Captioned

Descriptive videos describe the action, characters, costumes, locations, and sets without interfering with the movie’s dialog or sound effects. Closed captioned videos have subtitles that can be seen with a closed captioned decoder or with a built-in decoder on newer televisions.

Services
Provincial Talking Books Service

Patrons with physical, visual or other disability can have audiobooks mailed to their home.  Patrons can request specific audiobooks, or have staff choose titles based on preferences. To qualify for this service, borrowers must complete an application.

Home Reader Service

Available in St. John’s, Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, and Corner Brook.

The Home Reader Service delivers library materials free of charge to residents who are unable to get to the library due to disability or illness. Materials are delivered and picked up on a rotating schedule.
